The AreaColn St. Dennis

As villages go in the Cotswolds, there would be few as desirable as Coln St. Dennis on the River Coln. This quintessential village forms part of the parish that includes the village of Coln Rogers and the hamlets of Calcot, Fossebridge and Winson.

The delightful Cotswold town of Northleach is only 3.5 miles to the north. The streets in and around the ancient Market Place are rich in architectural interest ranging from half-timbered buildings and merchants’ houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, to the great House of Correction built at the crossroads in the 18th century. Walking through the town you can see reminders of the great days of the wool trade. Funded by wool merchants, the impressive church of St Peter and St Paul was built and remains one of the finest examples of the Cotswold perpendicular style. The town centre (Market Place) is compact and completely unspoilt, having changed little since 1500, except for more ‘recent’ additions of the late 16th and 17th century buildings, which split apart to form The Green. Most of the shops in Northleach are owned by independent proprietors – here you will find something for everyone. Northleach has a number of establishments offering quality accommodation plus a variety of places to eat and public houses.

Cirencester, known as the ‘Capital of the Cotswolds’, is only 8.2 miles to the south and is a lovely market town with a fascinating history. In Roman times, Cirencester, was the second largest town only to London. The town became a very prosperous wool town in the medieval period, which is the basis for the charming buildings with ancient honey coloured stone in picturesque narrow streets.

The Market Place is the heart of the town and is home to a Charter Market (every Monday and Friday) and a Farmers’ Market (every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month).

The variety of quality independent shops makes shopping in Cirencester a delight. Enjoy exploring the courtyards with their individual style and the many historic streets radiating from the town centre. Cirencester is renowned for its special shops, individual boutiques, fascinating antique emporiums and craft shops as well as national chain stores.

Coln St. Dennis is within easy reach of Oxford and Cheltenham, both providing more comprehensive shopping and recreational needs. The area is renowned for having a number of fantastic schools, both private and state, all being within easy driving distance. There are also a selection of primary schools in neighbouring villages.

The Fosse Way (A429) is only 0.5 miles to the west and, therefore, road communications are fantastic. The A417/A419 and A40 are a short distance away and provide access to London, via the M4/M40 and M5 to the west. Rail links are also good, with regular trains from both Kemble and Kingham.
